By afternoon, my four-and-a-half-mat tatami room was a sauna. When I get hot, I get irritated, and the anger I felt toward the underwear thief in the laundromat surged up again. Kneading the bear Iâd gotten in exchange for my briefs, I gazed at Kaori silently reading in the corner.
To clear my head, I applied myself to my studies.
But as I faced my textbooks, it started to feel like it was too little, too late to make up for the two years I had wasted. Being that pitiful is against my aesthetic, so I gracefully gave up on studying. I have pretty high confidence when it comes to this sort of grace. In other words, Iâm a gentleman.
And so, I had no choice but to rely on Ozu for the paper I had to turn in. There was a secret organization called the Printing Office through which you could get a paper written for you by placing an order. Iâd been relying on this shady org for my every need for so long that it had gotten to the point where I couldnât make it through a crisis without getting their help via Ozu. Both my body and soul were rotting away. This was one major reason I couldnât break our fatal bond.
It was only the end of May, but it was already muggy enough to be summer. I had my window open as far as I could without risking someone being offended by my porn collection, but the air wasnât moving. The various secret ingredients contained in the stagnant air were slowly maturing like the amber whiskey at a Yamazaki distillery; anyone who entered my four-and-a-half-mat tatami room would become altogether intoxicated. Still, when I opened the door to the hallway, the cat that prowled around Yusuiso came right in and meowed at me, the cute little bugger. It was so cute I wanted to eat it up, and I thought I just might, but of course I couldnât do something so barbaric. A man must be a gentleman even when wearing nothing but his underwear. After cleaning the mucus out of the catâs eyes, I shooed it back into the hall.
Eventually I flopped down and at some point fell deep asleep. I had woken up early, so I guess I didnât get enough rest. When I awoke with a start, the sun was already slanting quite a lot, and my day off was about to end as a total waste. The only thing significant enough to save this day from being a complete wash was English conversation school, and it was almost time for it. I got ready to go.
After having such a miserable time as a member of Mellow, I found myself unable to trust clubs any longer. As a result, I had more time than I knew what to do with. Inspired by Keiko Higuchi revealing that she worked at an English school, I had been taking lessons at a school in Kawaramachi Sanjo since the previous fall.
